Research

Research was carried out on the following subjects for the proposal.

1. Music: Potential for the music industry in Barcelona.
2. Flow: Flow of people on the Ramblas.
3. Accommodation: Condition of hotel accommodations in the vicinity of the Ramblas.
4. Proportion: Sectional configuration of the Ramblas and the coast.
5. Maresme: Rieres along Barcelona coast.

1.  Music: Potential for the music industry in Barcelona.
This research provided hints for a proposal to use the music industry to invigorate Barcelona.  Research was undertaken on projects related to the music industry in various cities throughout the world and on the current scale and nature of festivals in Barcelona.

2. Flow: Flow of people on the Ramblas
The volume of traffic during three periods of the day--morning, noon and night--on the Ramblas was measured at 13 places in carrying out a visual survey of the flow of pedestrians on the Ramblas.  At each place, traffic was counted in two directions and arranged as inflow and outflow; photographic records were also made of actual pedestrian traffic and the facades on the Ramblas.

3. Accommodation: Condition of hotel accommodations in the vicinity of the Ramblas
The size of single rooms and the charge per night at hotels for tourists in the Ramblas district were studied and collated.  Because there were so many hotels, the survey was limited to those facilities that could be studied on the internet; data on approximately 120 hotels were gathered.

4. Proportion: Sectional configuration of the Ramblas and the coast

a. Concerning the sectional configuration of the Ramblas
The facades and sections on the Ramblas were studied, and the streets that serve as the main urban axes of cities throughout the world were also investigated.  In addition to comparing Barcelona to other cities, the relationship to the surrounding area was considered by studying the sections of streets at right angles to the Ramblas.

b. Concerning the sectional configuration of waterfronts in Barcelona and other cities in the world
The focus was on the sectional organization of famous waterfronts throughout the world, from water to land.  An effective way to arrange the site for the workshop--the waterfront in Barcelona--was considered by comparing the relationships between transportation infrastructure along the water, open spaces, and buildings.

5. Maresme: The rieres along the coast of Barcelona
There are distinctive topographical features called "rieres" in Barcelona.  They are river-like (and are in places actually rivers); they run parallel between the mountains and the coastline.  In the Maresme community, there are about 20 of them.  Many of them have the potential to become the centers of urban development and can be used in many ways.  The conditions around the rieres were therefore studied.
