Workshop II
(Practice) is related to Workshop I (Theory) undertaken in Yokohama in
July. The stage was moved to
Taichung, a city in the middle of Taiwan, and the theme was "The Double
Engines of Taichung." The
proposals were for a still developing city very different in context from Yokohama.
The task
was to propose a vision for changing Taichung as a whole, using as a motive
force "The Double Engines," namely the potential of the new and old
urban districts of the city.
Sixteen students from Tunghai University and twelve students from Y-GSA
were divided into six mixed groups, which took different approaches in
undertaking research and analysis and developing proposals.
Summary of
Problem
"The
Double Engines of Taichung"
Taichung
has two centers, the old urban district and a new urban district. These two centers are expected to
become "The Double Engines" and to play a major role in the
development of the city as a whole.
However, the new urban district is still incomplete, and the old urban
district is in decline. Ways of
improving the new urban district and revitalizing the old urban district must
be found quickly.
Here too
the concept of "timescape" is an effective tool for analyzing and
designing the city. The existing
urban elements can be categorized and read according to a number of concepts
related to "timescape."
