Proposal

Team A: "Transplantation"

The old urban district in decline and the prospering new district are developing into polar opposites.  This is a proposal for transplanting elements from each district to the other in an effort to strengthen mutual ties and enable them to coexist as the Double-Engines of Taichung.

Team B: "Hotel/Motel"

This group took note of the motels and hotels that symbolize respectively the new and old urban districts of Taichung. The proposal is for a new motel prototype and an urban reorganization in which the development of a network of hotels is tied to the installation of open spaces.

Team C: "Gear"

The establishment of a strategic center for the "timescape" that utilizes the surrounding context and is located between the new and old urban districts.  The program and space are likened to gears.  Taichung as a whole is imagined as being driven by a number of gears of different sizes and rates of rotation.

Team D: "Motorbike"

The motorbike is the typical means of movement in Taichung.  This provided the hint for the formation of a distinctive urban structure.  A flexible Taiwan-type city plan is proposed, one that is different from Japanese city plans which are based mainly on planned roads and utilizes the mobility of motorbikes.

Team E: "MRT"

A proposal to connect the two urban districts three-dimensionally by means of the mass rapid transit (MRT) being planned between the districts seven to eight years from now.  This will add variety to the sense of speed that now prevails in Taichung and that is based on automobiles and motorbikes; it will reinforce the distinctive character of the city.

Team F: "River"

The four rivers in Taichung will be connected and reconstructed so that they flow through the city three-dimensionally, thus integrating them with urban activities and everyday life.  A new Taichung townscape that uses the rivers as a water network will emerge.
