Yoshihiko Iida’s PROFILE

Taking to the Streets and Thinking about Architecture

In the second half of the 20th century, globalization, the phenomenon also known as the information revolution, rendered completely dysfunctional the urban system that had been assiduously constructed up to that time. Nevertheless, Western cities that still retained communities with distinctive architecture have adopted the concept of compact cities once more and are gradually reviving. On the other hand, Japanese cities which have themselves destroyed practically all such communities remain in dire condition with no solution in sight. Yokohama too has been swept by the wave of globalization and is in a state of confusion; however, it is still alive. That is only because the districts hat make up the city cling stubbornly to life despite deterioration.
Iida Studio will take up these districts. That is, it will begin by examining the immediate real world. It will explore the future potential of architecture while carrying out fieldwork in districts. The task is to anticipate the nonfictional world and to invent fictional stories for generating architecture.
