Berlin State Library

This studio theme is re-interpretation "Berlin State Library". The library was completed from the planned start-up of 1964 after 14 years, it is the posthumous work of Hans Scharoun. Why now, we chose this library on the subject of " re-interpretation ". We, from the place to discuss that thing, let's start the challenge.
The library is located very near "The Neue Nationalgalerie (1986)" designed by Mies van der Rohe.
In addition, it is also the stage of the movie " Wings of Desire (1987)" directed by Wim Wenders.

When we are experiencing Berlin State Library, we notice that the fact that one and variety make a relationship at the same time. Experience when you are walking in the city, and it should be cherished when you think about the human and the community that are in the city, which is similar somewhere.
By all means, let's consider the architecture and human beings to share location that emits vividly life force. Let's enjoy the architectural design beyond the way to solve only in the program.

Please see "Minna no Mori -Gifu Media Cosmos- (Gifu City Library)" (Toyo Ito) ,also.

 The process is as follows:
① Start from going to Berlin State Library (or make a model 1:50 to experience space).
② Based on the space experience, what is fresh now? What are you lost now? Or whether no way
be considered at this late hour such a thing? And discussed, such as setting their own
"possibility of architecture."
③ Based on the above setting, you can design the same scale of the library. While kneading the
strategy, site is set that yourself. Please consider the relationship with the surrounding
  environment of course.
④ Design and Esquisse:If you create a model, not only look from the top, that you look into the
medium. Let's walk around inside the architecture. The found it, please also represented in the
drawings. (It is a failure that there is no drawing)
⑤ The middle critique : make 1:100 model.
⑥ Esquisse 1:50 scale:Please develop the internal design. Such as the diagram model Drawing,
pouring the consciousness also to those that re-presentation architecture.
⑦ The studio critique.( the end of the year or early next year) Then brush up.
⑧ The final critique.
⑨ The guest final critique.
We expect an interesting architectural design. Not only large model, also drawing required.

Hakka Tulou (ring form building)+ Unité d'Habitation

This studio theme is re-interpretation "Hakka Tulou", "Community area model" and " Unité d'Habitation" at the same time, and reconstruction on a site in Yokohama or Tokyo.

I have visited Hakka Tulou for the first time since I already invited to Amoy in Fujian Province in China on March. The most famous type is Ring form building, but there seems to be many types such as square form, horseshoe form, a pile of buildings, and a form which is not enclosed clearly. What was surprising was the number of building. There are 360 ring form and 4,000 square form buildings only in Yongding County. And these are distributed to Guangdong Province, it is said that the total number is more than 10,000 buildings. And also I found that several buildings built too close each other and the cityscape consisting square form.

The scale varied of Hakka Tolou but it is said that large ones are over 70m in diameter, include 400 rooms, and 600 people lived in there. I can guess there are many reasons such things completed but have shocked that so much group of buildings which is planed with someone's considerable strong resolve are distributed widely in certain places. It is more interesting to think how to share the big fiction than necessity to build. Despite I have understood the city of Ghardaia (the Sahara) is also one of the same examples which come into existence with that fiction, I realize only now that the similar one is in Asia.

And I am concerned "Community area model" by Riken Yamamoto (400 people live) is similar scale. "Community area " is not form of architecture but it must be re-read at the same time for thinking about current meaning of Hakka Tulou.

One more thing, I also suggest re-reading Unité d'Habitation by Le Corbusier at the same time on the issue of a large collective form of housing.

Of course, if you build same form such as traditional one, this project will be just anachronism. So the point is how to read critically from a standpoint of our day.

First we will start to visit and experience to Fujian Province in China.

After determining the project, you will undertake studies mainly with models.
It is hoped that you will ultimately present a large model at 1:50 scale.

Kazuhiro Kojima Studio - Fall semester 2014

An existing building (or a competition scheme or a project in progress) that is approximately 20,000m² or more in size will be selected from somewhere in the world. It could be, for example, Sendai Mediatheque or the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa.

It is hoped that the project will be one worth re-interpreting, such as those projects that have been assigned before, for re-reading such as FAU-USP, the Seattle Public Library and Yoyogi National Gymnasium. However, the selection of a bad building, for the purpose of critical re-interpretation, will be permitted.

You will in effect compete against the architect who designed that building and, working under the same conditions, come up with a different proposal. However, it will be set in the present, even if the project is an old one. That is the assignment.

You have the following two choices with respect to the site.
1. The site for which the building was originally designed.
2. A site somewhere in Yokohama.

After determining the project, you will undertake studies mainly with models.
It is hoped that you will ultimately present a large model at 1:50 scale.
